Mohamed Ben Soltane
Born in 1977 in Tunis. Mohamed Ben Soltane lives and works in Tunis.
After graduating from the Institut Supérieur des Beaux-arts de Tunis in 2004, Mohamed Ben Soltane spent several years photographing the anonymous tags and inscriptions on the walls of Tunis, the only place where Tunisians could express themselves freely at the time. He presented this work in 2007 at his first solo exhibition, “Tunis Sex’prime”, at the Espace Aire Libre in El Teatro (Tunis).
A multi-disciplinary artist, he moved from photography to animation, then to installation, before returning to a sober, organic style of painting in which gesture, stain, emptiness and white are the cardinal elements. He invents a world of burlesque and endearing characters who populate his canvases, finding their roots in the history of Tunisian art.
Mohamed Ben Soltane has taken part in several national and international exhibitions, including the Fort Pienç Civic Centre in Berlin and Stuttgart, the ArtMar Biennial in Barcelona, the La Panera Art Centre in Lleida, and the first edition of the Algiers Contemporary Art Festival in 2009.
